Main > Biography
I am an abstract artist. Over the years I have challenged perceptions of what is real, especially in a world saturated with virtuality. With a background in classical art education, I created the abstraction "Composition No. 1" in 1987, and later "The Great White Line Denying the Artificial in Art". In an age characterized by digital reflections, I explore how art and reality collide, and how objects can exist independently of our attention. This work challenged the perception of reality. My works have been exhibited in many galleries and renowned institutions such as the Tretyakov Gallery and art museums in Moldova and Ukraine.
Today, I am deeply interested in speculative realism, which explores the existence of objects independent of human perception. With my experience as a book artist, I explored the limits of semantics. I have been studying semantics and the translation of words into images since the 80s, and in the 2000s I continued this exploration at the Academy of Abstractionism. Through my works, I translate the vibrations of the world into graphics, where abstract ideas become real for the viewer. I have deep graphic roots, and with tools such as pencil, print and watercolour, I explore the deeper layers of art. My aim is not only to create, but also to arouse emotions, reflections and understanding in those who look at my work. My tools allow me to express the strong feelings that the war in Ukraine has inflicted on me.
Born in Sevastopol in 1968, I, Volodymyr Filippov, am a dedicated abstractionist. My artistic expression is rooted in profound sincerity, infusing freshness into a world where many images can be perceived as superficial copies.
My artistic journey began when I completed art school in 1986. With a classical art background, I started to explore new paths. Already in 1987, I filled my canvases with abstract motifs, creating my first masterpiece "Composition number 1." The same year, I delved into the world of innovation with "The Great White Line," a land-art project that later transformed into a photographic artwork. This work challenged our perceptions of reality in the digital age.
Throughout my career, my works have been exhibited in galleries around the world. Prestigious institutions such as the Tretyakov Gallery and leading art museums in Ukraine, Moldova, and Russia have commissioned my artworks.
In our current digital era, I have been deeply fascinated by speculative realism, exploring the existence of objects independent of human perception. Each stroke and color in my works becomes the key to deeper understanding.
Inspired by my background as a book artist, I have explored the boundaries of semantics. This study began in the 80s and continued later at the Academy of Abstraction. Through my works, I translate the vibrations of the world into graphics, where abstract ideas become real for the viewer.
As an artist with many facets, my passion extends beyond the canvas. As a film producer, I have created thirty films, recognized at international film festivals such as Cannes and Berlinale. Additionally, I have produced 23 art-focused videograms.
Recently, I have rediscovered my graphic roots. With pencil, old lithography, digital printing, and watercolors, I explore the deeper layers of art. This provides me with a platform to express the strong emotions that the war in Ukraine has caused me.
I invite you to explore my universe, a place where art touches the deepest threads of the soul and evokes wonder and reflection.
